Twelve Songs of Christmas

With it being just a few days before Christmas, just about everyone is listening to Christmas music. I love Christmas music and I'll admit that I will occasionally listen to it before Christmas, you know in like June.  But, I generally try to stick with listening to Christmas songs around this time of year and listen to them as much as possible.  Also, today was just a long, stressful day at work and I think I'm starting to get an ear infection (again), all of which did not put me in the greatest mood and I needed some cheering up.  Que Christmas music blasting through my speakers.  And so with all that in mind, I've decided to share my twelve favorite Christmas songs with you.  So, hope you enjoy!

#1 The Christmas Shoes
I have always loved this song and thought it was such a beautiful song and story.  You might want to have some tissues nearby watching the video, I know it always makes me cry!

#2 Yesterday, Tomorrow and Today/God Bless Us Everyone (Reprise)
I think this is a fantastic musical and one of my favorite versions of A Christmas Carol.  The music is composed by Alan Menken who I think is a brilliant composer.  This is one of my favorite parts of the movie and includes my favorite song, God Bless Us Everyone.  Absolutely wonderful vocals throughout!

#3 Little Drummer Boy
Josh Groban has the most amazing voice and I simply love his rendition of this song.  The guitar in the background is just beautiful and gives a certain simplicity to the song that I really haven't heard before.  The addition of the boy's vocal echoing just adds this kind of ethereal feel.  Beautifully done all around.

#4 Feliz Navidad
Growing up in New Mexico with half my family being Hispanic, this was one of the first Christmas songs that I learned.  Besides having sentimental value its just a fun song in general and it has a simple message that I like as well.  Also, I love songs that have trumpets in them which makes this song a winner in that category as well.

#5 Christmas Canon
Pachelbel Canon is one of my favorite classical songs, Trans-Siberian Orchestra is just amazing, and children's choirs are beautiful.  Combine all three and you have this beautiful song.

#6 When Love Came Down
Another sentimental song since this is one that my mom sang with some ladies from our first church and I was one of the kids who sang the children's choir part at the end.  Beautiful harmonies and lyrics throughout and it has some really fun upbeat parts to it.

Halfway there!

#7 Welcome To Our World
The piano in this song is absolutely beautiful and I think really creates the tone for the song.  Michael W. Smith's voice is wonderful as usual and the lyrics for this song are simply wonderful too.  I like how it gives a different perspective I think in looking at Jesus as a baby and seeing what He's going to go through as an adult as He's crucified.

#8 O Come, O Come, Emmanuel
The Piano Guys have done it again and created a beautiful piece of music in their rendition of this classic Christmas song.  The piano and cello blend beautifully and while you can absolutely tell what song they are playing, they've added some elements and embellishments of their own that are quite stunning.  There's a bit of a theme played repeatedly on the piano that I particularly enjoy and the way they switch who's playing the main song works very well and adds a lot of interest.  Again, beautiful!

#8 It Feels Like Christmas
This song is pretty much all sentimentality, you can feel free to think me weird for loving this song.  The Muppet Christmas Carol came out in 1992 and that's when my parents got it.  We have watched this movie every single year since then and I still have memories of my dad dancing me around on his shoulders or feet to this song.  Besides the sentimental aspect, I do like the lyrics as well and the message of sharing with others.

#9 Joy (To The World)
Avalon's take on the original song Joy To The World.  I really like this song because its so upbeat and fun yet still very meaningful.  I've always like the part where they say to "Stop in the hurry of Christmas" because its such a good reminder to slow down in the rush around Christmas and remember the real reason for the season.

#10 Hallelujah (Light Has Come)
BarlowGirl has such wonderful harmonies and songs and this one is no exception.  Beautifully sung and played, the song is sung from Mary's perspective.  The lyrics are simply but meaningful, particularly the chorus.  Also, the music video is quite beautiful as well.

#11 The First Noel
This not your typical version of this song.  Sung by Owl City and Toby Mac its a far cry from the original in sound being upbeat with some techno and synth sounds and of course with it being Toby Mac there's some rap as well.  In other words, I think its awesome and a lot of fun.

And, last but not least...

#12 The Christmas Guest
While not exactly a song, its a story with music and I love it.  This was another "song" that I grew up listening to and it was always one of my favorites.  The story is meaningful and a good reminder that we should always care for others because we never know who they might actually be.  I also really like Johnny Cash's voice.

Well, if you made it through all twelve songs I hope you enjoyed them and that they put you in a Christmas-y mood!  Feel free to share your favorite song(s) in the comments below.  God Bless and Merry Christmas!!!

  1. I'm not much of a Christmas music person. Okay, I can't wait for the Christmas music to stop on the radio. But speaking of music, this is one verse of one of my FAVORITE songs....

Before you ever took a breath
    Long before the world began
Of all the wonders He possessed
    There was one more precious
Of all the earth and skies above
You're the one He madly loves
    Enough to death

    You're beautiful
    You're beautiful
    In His eyes

Mercy Me, of course. First time I heard that verse, it stopped me in my tracks. Love, and merry Christmas from someone who's never been one of the beautiful people.
