British TV Shows In Quotes

Sometimes I wonder, as I'm sobbing over the death of yet another character in one of the British tv shows I watch, if this is healthy.  Is it good for me to watch shows that draw me in so easily, that captivate me, get me attached to the characters to the point where when they're in pain I hurt for them or if they die I'm left crying my eyes out?  And yet that's what makes them so fantastic, because they can do that.  Because they make you feel something, look at the world in a different light.  Because some of the things the characters say make you really think, make you look at your life differently.  They let you dream, let you believe even a little bit that maybe those amazing things you see episode after episode could be real.  There's something special about that.

So often we look at life and see it as boring or we think about things that would make life more exciting.  We appreciate the big things and not always the little things.  For a lot of people, me included, its easy to focus on the bad things in life and minimize or forget the good.  What I love about the shows that I watch is that they ask you to look at your life and see the good and the bad, to appreciate the little things in life, the simplest things we see or do.

For me as well, there are times when I look at the world and think how small I am, how unimportant I am.  This is a big world in an even bigger universe and I think it can be easy to feel very insignificant once you consider that.  And, yet, God knows each of us by name, knows every part of us.  And He reminds us all the time that we are important.  No matter how many people there are on this Earth, we are each unique and we are each important from the smallest to the greatest.  And some of these shows are a good reminder of that when I forget.  And sometimes that simplest thing that is said has a lot of meaning or a lot of truth to it, truths that we don't always think about and consider.

And sometimes they look at something as routine and normal as growing up.  I know as a child, growing up sounded so simple, exactly like the quote below.  Everything laid out, boom boom boom.  This is what's going to happen, the end.  But its not like that.  Its not always that simple.  I know plenty of people who have been like that, but I'm not one of them.  Truth is, the world and life is much stranger than that very straightforward, simple way of thinking.  And sometimes, as I'm discovering, it is darker and it is madder and it is harder.  But in a strange way that makes it better, because there's more to it.  It makes life an adventure and you never know where its going to take you.

And, finally, there are many times when we look at the world and we don't appreciate its beauty unless we're in a national park or some famous part of the world.  But there is beauty all around us, in our own yard, our own neighborhood.  The trees, the flowers, the birds, the insects are all so full of life, every part of them a testament to us that the Earth and everything in it, including us, was created by an infinite God.  But, again, we don't usually look at them because they're part of our everyday life, we don't really think about it.  Its familiar, there's nothing new, but with that kind of thinking we miss out on so much.

So maybe I'm crazy for loving these shows despite the emotional ups and downs they put me through.  But I think the benefits, all the times they make me look at my life, at the world, at people in a different light, I think that's worth it because it makes me appreciate it all more, makes me look at it more closely, makes me value it all more.  So here's to the shows that inspire me and keep going back for more, that ignite my imagination and keep me dreaming.
